How to Disable Your Mac’s Startup Sound
Here's how to prevent that from ever happening again. Luckily, Windows gives you a number of easy options for tweaking your system's startup sound. To tweak it:. Alternatively, you can scroll down the "Program Events" window and find "Windows Logon". From there, you can choose a different sound from the "Sounds" dropdown list, or hit Browse to choose one from your system. It won't silence it, but if you just want to change it to something a bit more subtle, you can do that here too.
The startup chime in OS X is a bit more obnoxious sounding, and quite a bit harder to turn off. You'll need to be comfortable with a bit of Terminal work, but when you're done, it'll automatically mute your computer on shutdown and unmute it when you boot back up.

This does appear to be the only way: I looked into rEFIt, but it didn't seem promising as a way to adjust the sound. And this is a dong or a boing, but not a beep I am aware that it tells you about how far EFI got: just like the old POST beeps, but the benefit just isn't worth the cost of annoying everybody around me..
It would make more sense to me if it would only make noises when something was wrong.. Thanks again! Now to re-install Ubuntu the right way February 15th, 8. Join Date Jan Beans 4. Originally Posted by tom4everitt.

That sound is basically hardwired into the firmware don't make go into detail on this, its all I know so I don't think anyone outside apple knows how to disable it. Adv Reply. February 5th, 2. February 5th, 3. When OS X is installed its usually very easy to turn it off, you just mute the sound before shutting it down or find an app that does it for you. So I would say your easiest option is to make a partition for os x, install it on that partition, mute the sound, shut down, remove the os x partition. Not that it is an easy option, and neither is it guaranteed to work.
